The Irsal project aimed at analyzing components of land use shifts and evaluating the sustainability of farming systems of the marginal lands of Lebanon. The viability of establishing a network of users to improve sustainable community development through direct involvement of the local beneficiaries.
 The project was designed and implemented through a multidisciplinary approach that includes a specific set of interactive methods both at the local level in which active participation of the users was sought and at the analytical level through the use of GIS and other research tools.The multidisciplinary project team involved fourteen researchers from different fields and expertise. Survey methods included Rapid Rural Appraisal, semi structured and structured interviews and informal inquiries. Farming system analysis was a critical research tool to identify and cluster target groups.
